Owen River Lodge is an owner-managed operation that specializes in fly fishing, yet also caters to non-fishers. With comfortable cottage suites and sensational modern cuisine featuring fresh local produce and Marlborough wines, this lodge is sure to please. Attention to detail, a dedicated house staff and a high level of service are hallmarks at this property ideally located close to an enormous variety of rivers and streams-over 25 are accessible within a 90-minute drive. The guest’s cottage suites are sun-lit and offer amazing views of the river, the Owen Ranges and Kahurangi National Park.
The region offers huge variety, ranging from small, intimate rivers like the Owen, to large iconic freestones. The average trout ranges from 3-6 lbs., but fish up to 10 lbs. are caught annually. It’s almost all sight-fishing here with outstanding guides, all of whom have 10+ years of experience.
With a capacity of 12, guests stay in 6 luxuriously-appointed detached cottage suites designed with the angler and non-fisher in mind. Each is en-suite with air-conditioning, mini-bar stocked with complimentary soft drinks, fruit juices and mineral waters, and tea and coffee making facilities.
Bring a 6-wt. fly rod, along with rubber-soled wading boots (felt-soled boots are not allowed in New Zealand). The lodge has a great SAGE & Simms rental program. Quality raingear and polarized glasses are essential. Dress in layers; we suggest neutral colors.
Guests fly to Nelson with direct flights from Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington and are transferred 90 minutes to Owen River Lodge. There is no set itinerary, but we suggest a minimum 4-night/3-day stay for anglers. Although Owen River Lodge is a specialist fly fishing lodge, there is an endless supply of “non-fishing” things to do around the immediate property, the local area and the greater Nelson/Marlborough region. The lodge’s goal is to allow you to unwind, relax and enjoy the stunning countryside around the lodge; and of course, to indulge in the world-class trout fishery.
Owen River Lodge operates from early October-April. Based on the current rate of exchange, high season rates (mid-December-mid-March) for a 4-night/3-day inclusive fishing package start at $2,747 per person based on double occupancy/shared guide.
