"Jurassic Lake" or Lake Strobel, no matter what you call it . . . the rainbows are immense!
Situated in the heart of remote Santa Cruz Province, Argentina on the shores of fabled Lake Strobel, otherwise known as Jurassic Lake, lies a true diamond in the rough, Estancia Laguna Verde.
Long known for her gargantuan inhabitants, Lake Strobel has been a target of well traveled anglers seeking their "personal best" rainbow trout while, previously, enduring rustic conditions in one of natures true wild places. Enter Estancia Laguna Verde.
Located on a 37,000-acre ranch approximately 185 miles east of Calafate, Argentina this estancia borders the southern shores of Lake Strobel and encompasses additional portions of the Barrancoso River, as well as a series of chain lakes teeming with trout. Because of the estancia's vast resources, anglers now have the opportunity to not only fish the flats and ledges in Strobel for cruising bruisers but may also to engage in New Zealand-like sight fishing in the river for individual targets ranging from 5- to 10-plus pounds or to fish the fifteen smaller remote lakes on the ranch property.
“SUBSTANTIAL improvements have been made since last year, and the fishing opportunities have been dramatically increased. They now have road access (quad bikes) to at least 6 bays that are fishable in the high winds that are common there, giving many different types of places to fish, and the ability to easily move from place to place to find fish, rather than flogging monster bay until something decides to swim within casting reach. The bays were varied and the waters were different in aspect, making for much more interesting fishing. Most of the fishing was sight fishing in these bays, even on windy days. Almost all fish were over 6 pounds with many over 10 pounds, in terrific shape, silver, high jumping and hard fighting.
For two days the wind dropped and we were able to fish a couple of places unfishable on windy days. They were SPECTACULAR — sight fishing for fish over 10 pounds (many 12 to 15. My biggest was 17 pounds on a #14 pheasant tail nymph). Overall, this was the best trout fishing for numbers, size and quality of fish that I have ever had. Both Peter C. (who was a guest of Luciano) and Charlie agreed. In addition, a couple of the other lakes fished very well. Laguna Verde, just outside the door of the lodge, provided very good fishing for rainbows from 4 to 8 pounds, in numbers, regardless of the wind speed, along with a few brook trout. Texas lake provided very nice 2- to 4-pound browns and beautiful rainbows as well. Everything else was as before — highly comfortable lodge, delicious food and wine, excellent guides, very attentive staff — all that you expect from a first-rate operation.”
