Slovenia Fishing - Fishing

The fishing season in Slovenia ranges from March through November for trout and grayling on most rivers, and fishing techniques vary greatly depending on the waterway and targeted species. Plan to have nymphs, streamers and an assortment of dry flies in your box (size 12-14 in the early season and 18-20 later in the year), though your guide will always have a generous selection on hand. Dry flies are suggested in size 16-18 throughout and a 9 ft. 5 wt. rod will serve you well on most every river. Fishing is from the bank or via wading, so breathable chest waders are essential; the rental of all gear can be arranged in advance through Frontiers and your guide. In the winter months, fanatic anglers can try their hand at ‘hunting' the Danube salmon (hucho hucho), a relative of the Mongolian taimen, which feeds at dawn and dusk and is generally pursued via spinning with large lures.
