The Lake Taupo watershed and wilderness rivers of the Central North Island are a year-round fishing paradise enjoyed by guests at Tongariro Lodge. The lodge has been in operation for 29 years and every year guests experience spectacular fly fishing in over 25 rivers and 4 lakes. Tongariro Lodge guides are amongst the most experienced in the country and provide access to the fishery by four wheel drive, raft and helicopter. A good number of these rivers run through private land and special access has been obtained over the years.
From October-April, Tongariro Lodge offers some of the best backcountry wilderness nymph and dry fly fishing to sighted browns and rainbows to be found anywhere. The helicopter fly-out options are truly remarkable. From April through November, rainbows that run like steelhead surge into the streams that feed Lake Taupo, including the Tongariro River, and produce thrilling winter fishing action.
