Toon Ken Lodge - Fishing

Toon Ken water has the characteristics of a smaller river. The wading here is easy with the river's grade still gentle although a bit steeper than what is found at her sister lodges, Kau Tapen and Villa Maria. This creates a narrower river with more consistent current in the pools. Seasonally, anglers should come prepared with sinking and floating lines and expect to use each during the stay. Sea-run trout are a mood-driven fish and in a day one may find themselves dredging the belly of pools in the morning for holding fish and later swinging leeches in the riffles to moving fish as the sun sets over the horizon.

On Toon Ken water both two-handed and single-handed rods work well. While many anglers are more comfortable throwing a "single" rod with heavy sinking lines, which works well here, the wind can always be a factor in Tierra del Fuego and for these days, a 12- to 14-ft, 8- or 9-weight two-handed Spey rod is an excellent choice for punching out line.

Anglers should note that even if they have never thrown a two-handed rod, we encourage you to give it a try. The learning curve is steep and many anglers will pick it up in a session or two. The guides are excellent instructors and will have you on your way promptly. With the length of these rods and the power, anglers can throw an exceptional amount of line, in virtually any conditions and easily mend the line which is key to the "down and across swing" method of fishing that is most productive in Tierra del Fuego. Comprehensive fly, tackle and gear recommendations are available in the Frontiers pre-trip document provided upon booking.
