Arctic Char

Fishing for Arctic Char

No other freshwater fish is found as far north; it is, for instance, the only fish species in Lake Hazen on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic. It is one of the rarest fish species in Britain and Ireland, found mainly in deep, cold, glacial lakes, and is at risk from acidification. In other parts of its range, such as the Nordic countries, it is much more common, and is fished extensively.

Where can you Fish for Arctic Char?

Char can be found in the UK, although very rare they can sometimes be caught in the deep lochs of northern Scotland such as Loch Choir. More commonly found in Iceland, Greenland and Norway. Rivers and lakes accommodate Arctic Char in these counties up to enormous sizes.

Fishing Tackle for Arctic Char

An 8ft 5 weight is your typical weapon of choice when taking on Char. However, there are many different ways to catch these fish. You may be streamer fishing in the Lakes of Iceland for fish up to 10lbs, this would require something with a little more power. Or perhaps you are dry fly fishing for the tricky Char in small glacial streams. Pick up the phone and hear our advice.

Fishing Flies for Arctic Char

Arctic Char can be caught on a variety of flies; dry-flies are popular, however streamers and nymph fishing can be far more effective.
