Chrome Chasers Steelhead

April and May sight fishing for wild Steelhead in Southeast AK

They take their name to heart during the spring steelhead season. Fresh, ocean-bright steelhead is their passion. Target the freshest, brightest steelhead, as close to the saltwater as possible, in remote, small to mid-sized streams. All streams and rivers they fish are reached via the sea, travelling in their 37 ft. enclosed cabin boat. The streams have very limited access and are basically untouched. This is a very physical trip navigating remote streams on foot with challenging hiking. It will likely involve covering several miles of one river, or creek, or multiple waters on the same day.

Fishing

Every angler needs to meet the physical demands fishing the streams of the Tongass National Forest. You must be agile enough to get from the big boat to the smaller, sometimes squirrely jet boat. These are very small streams where sight fishing is the main tactic. Limited to 4 per week.

Accommodation

The Lodge very close to the town of Wrangell and offers breathtaking views. Gaze up the Stikine River from any of the 5 bedrooms. Views of the town of Wrangell and the bay below can be enjoyed from the kitchen, dining room and formal living room. The wrap around deck surrounds the lodge.

Gear

Rods/reels/flies are provided. If bringing your own, a 10’ 7 wt. rod is ideal, overlined by one size. Roll casting is the method on these small waters. Longer rods work best. You will often not have room to load a back cast. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking.

Trip Specifics

Guests fly commercially to Wrangell, AK arriving on Sunday. The lodge is only 10 minutes from the airport. After a warm lunch, you’ll drive to the dock where the boat will be waiting with shrimp and crab pots. You will drop and set crab and shrimp pots around Wrangell Island for about 3 hours. The freshly harvested seafood will be incorporated into the evening meal. The steelhead operation is limited to 4 per week to give each angler more opportunities at fish and to limit the impact on the species. Each guest is encouraged to book the trip with a fishing partner of similar physical ability.

Rates

6 nights lodging and 5 day of guided fishing is $9,000 per person. Limited to only 4 anglers per week in double occupancy rooms. They include seafood harvesting where guests will set crab and shrimp pots and monitored through your week of fishing and harvesting fresh seafood daily.
