Grand Bahama’s East End has long been known for its fantastic bonefishing; it is especially renowned for bigger fish. However, a great selling point for Deep Water Cay is that it’s one of the best bonefish lodges with other great activities in all of the Bahamas. Taking friends along to enjoy diving, snorkeling, and more is the norm rather than the exception.
All of the legends in the bonefish world have fished here. Fantastic guides in a great resource, top-end food and accommodations, and a friendly atmosphere all coalesce to make Deep Water Cay a perennial favorite.
Flats fishing at Deep Water Cay is either from the bow of a skiff or by wading the hard white sand bottoms. Both size and numbers of fish are impressive, and the guide pool is second to none. You’ll sometimes get permit and often some big barracuda. There’s also a great offshore fishing program.
Nicely appointed waterfront cottages with queen beds, air conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms provide comfortable privacy. For larger groups or families, the Cay has gorgeous waterfront homes all featuring access to the Lodge and its amenities, the water sports center, tennis courts, gym, etc.
8-wt. outfits with floating lines are the norm, while 9-wts. provide additional backbone for bigger fish and the occasional permit or barracuda opportunity. Basic bonefish patterns like the Gotcha and Spawning Shrimp are great, w/tippets and leaders tapered to 12 lbs. Rentals are available.
Open year-round, except for July - September
Guests can fly commercially to Freeport or charter privately from Ft. Lauderdale and utilize the lodge’s private airstrip for added convenience and to maximize fishing time. The lodge can provide transportation from the Freeport airport via one-hour shuttle service.
For the non-fishing participants, there are an amazing number of activities available including kayaking, diving, snorkeling, tennis, white sand beaches, sailboats and stand up paddleboards.
