This is the time when everyone in the UK starts to shoot along with those lucky enough to have shot grouse. The duck and partridge seasons open on the 1st September and pheasants on the 1st October. October is the month where it is possible to enjoy all the species with some reliability with the grouse being the greatest risk. To enjoy partridges over the stubbles of Hampshire or off the edge of the grouse moors is a real treat. Perhaps do a day of grouse and then a day's partridge shooting, two completely different disciplines. There is bound to be a few high, early pheasants in there too.
During this part of the season, we recommend focusing on the grouse and partridges. September is a superb time for both and, while October can become questionable for the moors, the grouse are at their most challenging along with the partridges in their prime. This is a superb time to be shooting.
Accommodation can be at a local hotel or private house or on the shooting estate itself, depending on personal preference and availability. Frontiers will help and advise on choice of accommodaion and transport at the time of booking. Accommodation is always required to provide secure gun storage.
On the moor, start to rug up warm with an extra layer and waterproofs. In the valleys enjoy shirt sleeve and walking boot weather and lunches outside but make sure you have lightweight waterproofs handy. As is always the case, ear and eye protection are vital and shooting gloves are a good idea too.
While we can plan and advise for individuals, achieving exactly what you want is much easier as a private party or team of guns, especially if you hope to mix and match species in a short space of time. The best time to plan for your shooting trip is February or March for partridges and even earlier if you hope to shoot grouse. Not only can the shooting be hard to arrange but well-known shooting hotels do get booked up early too. If you are inexpereinced with driven shooting, for the greatest comfort level in the shooting field, we recommend some pre-trip tuition and/or a coach in the field.
With different bag sizes and different accommodation options, as well as opportunities for single, double or even multiple days, all shooting is subject to quotation. Frontiers are also happy to quote for preparational shooting practice and tuition, transport, cartridges, gun storage and tipping.
