Most pheasant shoots begin in earnest from early November unless they have a mix of partridges or duck to shoot. November is a prime month when the leaves are pretty much off the trees and the covers are full of birds which are now fully grown and ready to fly at their best. It is the optimum combination of numbers and quality of birds. If there are partridges they will be flying at their very peak but perhaps not in the numbers enjoyed in October. November is the best time to string a series of days together or even a whole week of shooting from Scotland all the way to the West country.
With less daylight a typical day’s shooting at this time of year begins at 9 am when guns will move to the first drive. Perhaps shoot two drives before elevenses (warm drinks and canapés often made of local game and produce). A further drive before lunch and perhaps one or two drives after lunch.
Accommodation can be at a local hotel or private house or on the shooting estate itself, depending on personal preference and availability. Frontiers will help and advise on choice of accommodaion and transport at the time of booking. Accommodation is always required to provide secure gun storage.
Though climates are warming, as we enter this winter season, lighter coats and walking shoes can often be left at home in favour of warmer clothing. Favour a change of coats for that very rainy day and weillington boots. Do not forget eye and ear protection and perhaps two pairs of gloves.
The more you wish to piece together a series of days for variable species or in different locations which must fit together, the sooner you need to plan. We recommend starting to focus right after the end of the season in February. While we can certainly look after and advise individual travellers, a team of six to eight guns is a much easier prospect in terms of achieving all objectives. Key considerations are quality, or height, of the birds, which will depend on your party's experience level, accommodation and if you have non-shooting guests with you and if they will join you in the field.
