The Brontosaurus of rainbow trout inhabit the lakes and rivers of Estancia Laguna Verde, and if you like to hunt for the big ones, there is no better spot on earth. Fishing here in early and late season allows for behemoths New Zealand-style in the Barrancoso River and in the famous lake. Mid-season fishing will find you wading the shallow bays and inlets for these cruising leviathans. Retire to the relaxed lodge; courteous staff and hearty meals round out this unique fishing adventure in this vast, lonely region of Patagonia.
Fish Strobel Lake, Barrancoso River, or one of the other 12 lagunas and creeks on the ranch for oversized rainbows. Regardless of where you find them, when you hook one you are in for some “reel” screaming, heart pounding, tug-of-war action on the uninhabited windswept water and pampas of Santa Cruz.
The estancia accommodates up to 12 guests in 10 double rooms with en suite bathroom. Amenities include satellite TV, lodge computer/Wi-Fi, a tying table, and spacious drying room. Argentine wines and regional micro-brews complement ample meals.
Wind-worthy 8-wt. rods are preferred when fishing the lake complemented with a 6-wt. weight forward floating lines and intermediate sink tip lines w/strong tippets are needed to land these monsters. Layering is key in Patagonia; plan accordingly. A full tackle and gear list provided upon booking.
The season runs November-April. As a tip, this is a stunning early season fishery. Laguna Verde offers stays from 4-nights up to 7 nights; weekly arrivals on Saturday. Fly to Buenos Aires and connecting flights to El Calafate. Commonly an overnight in El Calafate is necessary and enjoyed. 4.5 hour drive into the Estancia. Fishing generally begins on arrival. Extend your stay by adding fishing in northern Patagonia, wingshooting in Cordoba, sea-run brown trout in Tierra del Fuego or trips to Torres del Paine National Park. El Calafate is the Argentine gateway to the park.
2024-2025 rate: One week program $7500 per person. Based on singe room/shared guide and including El Calafate transfers. Shorter stays are available upon request.
