Exceptional Fly Fishing Prospects at Tongariro Lodge This Upcoming Season

Nestled in the heart of New Zealand, Tongariro Lodge, is a phenomenal destination for anglers and non-anglers alike, with fantastic opportunities to hunt trophy trout in the Tongariro River and Lake Taupo Tributaries. The upcoming season promises to be the best yet, with unparalleled access to pristine wilderness waters and thriving fisheries. Here’s a sneak peek into the fly fishing prospects that await you…

A Record-Breaking Winter Run

This past winter has been nothing short of spectacular, the trout migration from Lake Taupo into the Tongariro has yielded impressive results. Rainbows are weighing in between 3.5-7 lbs, and early-season browns are reaching 5-8 lbs. These migratory fish are present year-round, with peak runs from May to October. Many of these winter/spring run trout will remain in the rivers throughout summer, ensuring fantastic fishing opportunities.

Prime Season in the Remote New Zealand Wilderness

In October, the backcountry streams beyond the Taupo region will open for the season. Early season from October to December is prime time for seasoned anglers. The rivers are less crowded, and the fish, undisturbed for months, are voraciously feeding. By November, the longer days and high sun create perfect conditions for spotting and stalking. December heralds the opening of the isolated upper reaches of the Tongariro and Taupo tributaries. A rafting trip on the upper Tongariro promises exceptional fishing throughout the summer, making it a must on your trip to NZ.

From November through March, the rivers transform into a paradise for dry-fly fishing and wet wading. Ideal for sight fishing, with there being high hopes for another excellent cicada year. Fishing with cicada imitations is the ultimate dry fly experience, and the prospect of landing trophy browns (some exceeding the magical 10lb mark) is irresistible.

Exclusive Helicopter Access

Tongariro Lodge boasts the distinction of being New Zealand’s most experienced helicopter access lodge. This allows us to offer unparalleled access to expansive private lands and 14 remote rivers. With helicopter access to up to 60 kilometers of prime fly fishing territory anglers can pursue both brown and rainbows in pristine, remote settings.
