Set in mid-Finland, a very peaceful and pretty part of the country, Kellankoski Lodge provides unique trout fishing for large wild trout. For the majority of the season the fishing is focused on these large predatory trout hunting the runs of baitfish (bleak, rouch and vendace) that come out of the lakes and into the faster sections of river to spwan. It is not uncommon to see the trout busting the baitfish in the fast water time and again. As the season progresses into August there is more dry fly orientated fishing for the same large trout. There is also great pike fishing year round.
In the heart of the season the fishing usually takes place at night when there will be moments the trout come on and one has to be there and ready for when the action starts. The trout can also be caught during the day but the bait feeding frenzies tend to take place at night. Pike are always there!
Your hosts are Jani and Titta Himanko. Titta has taken firm control of the lodge and takes huge pride in delivering a comfortable experience for guests. The was built in 1923 and was a school for a long time but Jani and Titta have made it a comfortable and convenient base for their fishing guests.
The lodge would like guests to bring a 7 or 8 -weight. The trout are extremely strong because of the fast water but they big wild fish too. Ideally they want you to use 18 to 20lbs test leaders due to the larger flies and big strong fish. Chest waders, felt studded boots and a wading stick required.
In terms of travel, we think the easiest and most interesting way to get there is to rent a car from Helsinki airport and do the very easy drive but there are flights to Jyväskylä Airport, which is 56 km away. Alternatively a train to Jyväskylä train station is a good option and the trains in Finland work very well. Having a car gives you that extra bit of freedom too. The nearest village, Konnevesi, is 10-minutes away, the nearest city is Jyväskylä about 56 kms away. The nearest doctor is 10 minutes away, hospital 55 minutes away. This is a very easy, relaxed and fun trip!
