Laxa in Kjos is the nearest top-quality river to Reykjavik, just 45 minutes from town. It drains an area of approximately 200 km2, and with its tributary, the Bugda, has 25 km of salmon water with over 80 named pools. The river has a superb variety of pools with pots and falls along its length. It flows through a narrow rocky canyon from its upper reaches into long smooth pools through meadows in the middle before its wide, shallow lower reaches flow to a lovely tributary.
The Kjos water is blue clear like a mountain stream. When the river has water, it is the perfect salmon river with every variety of pool imaginable working well. Kjos is a great little river with everything including some very impressive sea trout up to 12lbs.
The lodge is purpose built for the river. It is spacious in every capacity and has fine views towards the mountains across the river where the Bugda tributary enters the main stem. A post-lunch nap on the river patio in the sun would be time well spent!
A single handed rod 7 wt is all that you require at Laxa in Kjos. A highly effective fly is the micro-tube (often with a cone-head in silver or gold) with a size 14 or 16 silver treble hook. The most common tippet strength is 8 to 12lbs but bring 15lb as some pools have sharp rocks.
The Kjos often features highly among the top rivers in Iceland and its sea trout are a real bonus - some guests come just for them. Located in the west of Iceland, Laxa in Kjos is only 1 hr 20 mins from Keflavik airport and close to Reykjavik. Alternatively you can fly into Reykjavik airport by private jet, 35 mins away.
Every trip to Iceland is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different lodges and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
