This river is like two rivers in one. Beginning in April you can target chunky brown trout who are eager to put on weight from the winter spawn. Late June until the end of the season, the brown trout become selective feeders but by then the Atlantic salmon start arriving and the river begins its second phase until the end of the salmon season. With a consistent flow of water from Lake’s Langavatn & Kringluvatn, the Myrarkvisl does not often suffer from the same water woes that some other rivers experience in Iceland which means that the salmon struggle to enter the river system.
The Myrarkvisl has good numbers of salmon for such a small river (25 km) and is perfect for a single-handed rod. The river is known for it’s healthy run of multi winter fish of 10 to 20 pounds, along with getting it’s fabulous trout.
The 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom lodge was built in 2017 with comfort in mind and is a perfect place to stay. If catered, the food is good quality with fresh local ingredients in home style meals served in an informal manner suitable for a small lodge.
Single handed rods ranging from a 5wt to 8wt depending what you are fishing for. a mixture of small and large salmon flies and nymphs for trout. Floating lines and a back-up sink-tip. 8, 10 and 12lb leader covers most rivers with 15 or even 20lbs on some.
Do not expect big numbers but you do have a great shots at larger salmon and you will love the trout fishing varying from upstream nymphing in fast water to perfect dry fly on the upper flats in stunning scenery. Located in the north of Iceland, Myrarkvisl is close to Husavik and only 15 mins from its airport. (Alternatively Akureyri, 1 hr away, suitable for your private plane) Alternatively you can fly into Reykjavik airport by private jet, 6 hrs away; or Keflavik airport, 7 hrs away.
Every trip to Iceland is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different lodges and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
