A high country sheep and cattle station situated an hour from Queenstown and Te Anau, Nokomai is one of the larger properties in New Zealand. It is well known for both its farming and gold mining history. The Mataura River, a world famous trout fishery, winds its way through the southern end of the property. Nokomai Valley accommodations give visitors the opportunity to come and experience station life for themselves. Guests can enjoy activities such as fishing, mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, or they can go back-country with Nokomai Helicopters.
Nokomai is a popular base for guided fly fishing anglers with at least 25 rivers within a one-hour drive, including the Mataura, Mararoa, Whitestone, Aparima, Waikaia and Nevis. The nearest and most important river to anglers at Nokomai is the Mataura, only 2 minutes from the accommodations.
There are 4 comfortable, 1- or 2-bedroom cottages, with spacious living areas and a kitchenette in each. The dining and reception area is located in the adjacent old stone historic house built in 1870's. The house is a great place to relax in the evenings with well prepared meals and NZ wines.
Bring a 6-wt. fly rod and rubber-soled wading boots (felt-soled boots are not allowed in New Zealand). The guides have gear available and a rental program. Quality raingear and polarized glasses are essential. Dress in layers; we suggest neutral colors. Don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent.
The closest commercial airport is Queenstown, about an hour away. Most clients rent a car, but transfers (even by helicopter) can be arranged. There is no set itinerary, but we suggest a minimum 4-night/3-day stay for anglers. Exceptional guiding is provided. There are many non-fishing activities on this working farm and there is abundant sightseeing in the region. Many guests continue on to Te Anau and Milford Sound after staying at Noklomai. For an authentic Kiwi-run program on an amazing remote sheep station, Nokomai is tough to beat and it’s a great value!
Operates from early October-April. Based on the current rate of exchange, high season rates for a 4-night/3-day inclusive fishing package start at $1,913 per person based on double occupancy/shared guide. Other packages quoted upon request. A terrific value for a high quality lodge experience.
