Off the Grid "X-ploratory Trips" in Spain

There was a certain feeling you probably had when you were younger, exploring with your friends, finding a stream or a pond that felt untouched, like you were about to be the only people who fished it. That feeling can become harder and harder to find, but at Salvelinus Outfitters, there's a new program called "X-ploratory Trips" where you might just rekindle that feeling. If you can walk and appreciate proper dry fly fishing to rising fish, sight fishing on nymphs or light droppers on a 4-5 wt rod, this is a fantastic opportunity for you.

These trips explore three distinct and pristine valleys, each offering a different kind of magic:

  • The Wide River – A scenic and easily walkable stretch of water, ideal for a relaxing day on the water.
  • The Spring Creek – A stunning, crystal-clear stream teeming with wild fish ranging from 18 to 22 inches—and the occasional much larger trophy. The challenge here is as rewarding as the catch.
  • The Freestone Gorge – A rugged, remote canyon harboring brown trout of legendary proportions, including a 9-pound beauty landed last season during a quick 30-minute session.

The "X-ploratory" name reflects the program’s focus on preserving these special places. Locations are kept confidential until booking, and there’s a strict no-camera policy for clients, though guides can take photos upon request. This approach ensures the fisheries remain off the radar and protected from overexposure.

The best time to visit is April and May, when water levels are ideal, and mayfly hatches are in full swing. The fishing is technical, with all wild, native fish. While regular-sized catches are plentiful, there’s also the chance to target trophy browns. All fishing is done by wading.

If you enjoy technical fishing in remote, unspoiled settings, a trip to Spain for an X-Ploratory trip might just be the perfect fit for you. Contact Lisa Kiley for more details.
