Options for Multiple Seasons on the Limay

The 2024-25 trout season in Argentina is under way and good water levels are expected throughout the year in Northern Patagonia due to a nice snow pack in the mountains from the previous winter.  One river that fishermen should be thinking about is the Limay River - or more specifically the middle Limay.

The Limay River is renowned for its exceptional dry fly fishing, particularly in the warmer months from December through early April.  The river's rich insect life, with prolific hatches of mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies, makes for some truly exciting dry fly fishing, where anglers can sight-fish and cast to rising trout along rocky cliffs and riffles. From the summer's hatches in late November to the fall's intense insect activity in March to early May, the Limay offers long stretches of productive dry fly water, with the potential for truly memorable moments on the surface.

In May the focus turns to the migratory brown trout that flood the river from El Chocon Reservoir.  During this time, the majority of these large fish—ranging from 22 to 30 inches—are often caught on dry flies, especially in the calmer, clearer water conditions, but they are also caught by swinging large streamers in the deep pools.

A variety of good options are still available throughout the year, for more information on these dates, please contact me, Ben Hoffman.
