Aggressive taimen on top-water and sub-surface flies in North-Central Mongolia

Tucked in North-Central Mongolia, the camps are located on vast kilometers of conservation-protected river that harbors the highest population of monster taimen in the world. More trophy fish are landed here than from any other river, and most are taken skating mouse patterns. The topography is reminiscent of Yellowstone, Montana and resident nomadic herders are jovial; welcoming anglers to their countryside. Mongolia is as much a cultural adventure as a fishing destination providing beautiful, haunting memories. The Gobi Desert, Wild Horse Refuge or Eagle Festival are favored trip extensions.

Fishing

Taimen–the world’s largest salmonid-are explosively aggressive and eager to eat from the surface. Both top and sub-surface skated flies entice violent, rod-wrenching strikes on these protected freestone rivers amidst majestic scenery. Lenok and grayling sip duns and nymphs for added fly rod action.

Accommodation

The riverfront Eg-Ur and Tarialan Camp each offer 8 fishermen traditional Mongolian Ger tents featuring 110-volt electricity, wood stoves, hot water, cozy beds and ample gear storage. Each are complemented with a social main lodge and wood-burning shower house. Meals are hearty and multi-cultural.

Gear

Single-handed 8-wt. rod with weight-forward floating line and corresponding sinking line for taimen; 4-5-wt. rod with floating lines for lenok. Two-handed rods applicable, but not optimum. Guides provide all taimen flies. Layering is imperative. A full pre-trip packet is provided upon booking.

Trip Specifics

Extend to the Gobi Desert or Eagle Festival. Spring season- tentative due to Mongolian regulations. Transfers from/to Ulaanbaatar/camps-fixed wing aircraft/overland drive in spring and fall seasonally. Substitutions are possible. Frontiers urges an added overnight on the front of the journey in Ulaanbaatar, please inquire. Hotel upgrades in Mongolia are available and often suggested. Wilderness camps are rustically comfortable and functional and ideally situated for maximum fishing experiences. Tarialan Camp offers Hungarian Partridge hunting as an optional extra. Rates

Fall 2025 - $9,015/angler ($7,700 fishing; $840 charter; $475 fishing license). Aug 18 - Oct 13. Includes 2 nights in Ulaanbaatar (w/ breakfast), airport transfers, camp transport, 6.5 days fishing, lodging, and meals. Excludes airfare to Mongolia, gratuities, fishing gear, or extra reservations.
