The south of England chalkstreams, particularly the rivers Test and Itchen, are home to the development of dry fly fishing (Frederic Halford - the father of modern dry fly fishing) and upstream nymphing (G.E.M. Skues - credited for the invention of modern nymph fishing) in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Time has undoubtedly moved forward but these rivers, just 90 minutes from London, and their magical surroundings, remain as appealing as ever. With an office in the UK, nobody is better placed to prepare a true chalkstream experience for you to fish these beautiful, hallowed waters.
Most rivers fish upstream dry fly only for the first part of the season before allowing upstream nymphing in addition to dry fly later in the season. Fishing is done on sections (or beats) of the river which are private water for the selected day to allow water and fish to be rested as needed.
The chalkstreams are close to London therefore day trips are perfectly possible but why not enjoy the English countryside and stay in one of the fine country pubs or hotels in the area? Staying nearby allows fishers to relax and linger on the river during those beautiful early summer evenings.
Ideal rods are an 8.5 to 9ft 4 and 5 wt, with floating line though 3 weight rods and smaller are fun too. Some beats do require wading while wellington boots will suffice on most. Avoid bright clothing, but a cap, waterproof and polaroid sunglasses are essential. Tippet will vary from 5x to 8x.
Frontiers staff have literally grown up fishing and guiding on these rivers and enjoy preparing wonderful experiences for single rods or small groups either by the day, a few days, or even a week. We can literally take you to fish and enjoy a riverside lunch where Halford changed the fly fishing world over a hundred years ago.
To make the most of your trip we recommend planning early to ensure the best opportunities for both fishing and accommodation. We recommend starting to plan before Christmas of the year before. Frontiers can arrange fishing, guides, accommodation and
