This once grey, muddy river is now a beautiful, clear salmon river which gets better with every season. Thanks to a hydro-project completed in 2006, the mud and silt from 'the muddiest river in iceland' has been diverted and thanks to a great deal of work, the salmon population is thriving. As the run grew, the salmon spread further and further up the river until there was an upper and lower Jokla fishery but that has been done away with and now there is one lodge for just eight rods who can follow the run and fish where the fish are at any given time.
As well as the main stem, Jokla Lodge has access to three or four tributaries so the main river is mostly double-handed rod (some uise single-handers) but the tributaries are single-handed rod fishing. The river has a good mix of multi-sea winter fish as well as grilse. This is clear water fishing.
Accommodation is at the fulled-staffed Jokla Lodge on the lower river. Each full rod has their own ensuite bathroom. There is a main lodge with a sitting and dining room as well as a spacious area for sitting outdoors. If the fish are upriver, drives can be long but lunch is often served up river.
We suggest a 12 to 14 ft double-hander for the main river and single-handers of a personal choice for the tributaries. Chest waders are required with either rubber or felt soles with studs. Dress code for the lodge is relaxed. Bring layers for the variable Icelandic weather.
We suggest flying into Iceland's international airpirt Keflavik, and transferring to the domestic airport in Reykjavik and flying up to Egilsstadir on the same day. There you will overnight at a local hotel which allows for a leisurely morning before being picked up at lunctime to drive about 40-minutes to the lodge. On arrival, settle in, meet the staff and your guide and head out fishing. On the return, fish until midday, transfer to Egilsstadir for your flight to Reykjavik. Transfer to an airport hotel, overnight and depart for home in the morning.
Fishing is sold on a 4 days basis offering guests the chance to fish all four beats in operation twice, once in the morning and once in the evening. Prices are variable between £8,000 and £10,000 for the four days.
