Kjarra is the upper section of the Thvera/Kjarra river, it offers 4km of fishing with 91 pools. This river system is often in the top three salmon rivers in Iceland. It is wild and remote with no buildings other than sheep shelters along the banks. This river offers a truly private experience and is prized for its location as well as the size and number of fish. You can also experience a ride up to the top of the river by Icelandic horse to fish water that is maybe fished a handful of times a year!
This is the fishing so many dream about in Iceland. Remote, canyons, no another buildings in sight, no roads and classic pools which require thought and application. Perfect for small flies and riffled hitch. Quite physical to get around so not for everyone. A single-handed or switch rod is best.
Newly renovated, the lodge offers a comfortable and spacious communal sitting and dining area alongside 8 small en-suite bedrooms. The staff are top notch and the food outstanding. The real experience however is the reality that the seven rods are the only people in the whole valley.
We recommend a 7wt or 8wt single-hander and switch or 12ft double-hander with floating line and a back-up sink-tip. 8, 10 and 12lb leader is likely best with 15lbs tops. Chest waders are best though wading deep is very rare. Most important is a good selection of small Icelandic flies.
One of the best and most loved rivers in Iceland. It has big fish some years and lots of fish other years. Come hoping for good fishing and be ready to be challenged physically and technically. As with any river, conditions are important. Located in the west of Iceland, Kjarra is 3 hours (one hour up the track) from Keflavik airport, close to Borganes. Alternatively you can fly into Reykjavik Domestic airport by private jet, 2 hrs 40 mins away. There is decent interet in the lodge but mimimal phone signal.
Every trip to Iceland is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different lodges and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
