Christmas Island
CHRISTMAS ISLAND OF THE REPUBLIC OF KIRIBATI IS A REMOTE ATOLL LOCATED ABOUT 1300 MILES FROM HONOLULU IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN. THE ISLAND IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS FRIENDLY PEOPLE & MOST OF ALL AS A RUSTIC FLY ANGLERS PARADISE.
Fishing: Christmas Island (Kiritimati) is a year-round fishery that boasts over a dozen species of fish including big bonefish, giant (GT), bluefin, & golden trevally, milkfish, triggerfish, and many others. Kiritimati is primarily a fly fishing destination, where lone anglers can be found wading the flats for up to 8 hours a day. There are also opportunities for offshore fishing excursions for tuna, wahoo, and sailfish. An adventure to Christmas Island is not for the faint of heart but be confident knowing that the long fishing days are rewarded with the vast number of fish you will bring to hand throughout your stay. If your dream is to fight and land a 100+ pound GT or to have shots at the elusive golden trevally, Christmas Island should be on your bucket list.
Other Activities: Though Christmas Island is known as an angler's nirvana, that doesn't mean a non-angler can't accompany you. One may argue that Kiritimati is also a bird watcher's paradise, due to the 18 species of seabirds found on the atoll including fairy terns, masked boobies, red-tailed tropic birds, and wedge-tailed shearwaters to name a few. In addition to birding, non-anglers can also surf, snorkel, scuba, or relax on the beach.
