The Naknek River is the Number One Rainbow Trout River in Alaska

The clear water Naknek River, which begins its 35-mile journey to Bristol Bay from within the massive Katmai National Park and Preserve, hosts all five species of Pacific Salmon along with giant rainbow trout. Downstream from Naknek Lake at the juncture of King Salmon Creek is the Bear Trail Lodge. The location allows you to fish for salmon on their home river or fly out on a daily basis (included). These fish are just 20 miles from the ocean and dime bright. You can fish the best spots of the upper part of the river where large rainbows are feeding behind spawning salmon.

Fishing

The Naknek River receives runs of all five pacific salmon and was voted Alaska’s number one rainbow trout river. The package includes access to the Naknek and Kvichak Rivers via boat/fly-out fishing in the Katmai/Bristol Bay area! This is the best place to enjoy great fishing in style.

Accommodation

The inviting, cedar main Lodge offers a large dining room, relaxing living room, and spectacular sunroom with decks overlooking the Naknek River. The heated private guest cabins include spring beds, private bath/shower, and comfortable couches. The entire Lodge is connected via a boardwalk system.

Gear

Fly: 6 and 8 wt. fly rods or 5 and 7 wt. work well all season. Conventional: Lightweight rod/reel combo for smaller fish and a medium action rod (6–7 ft) for salmon. The lightweight reel will hold 150 yards of 6–8 pound mono. Salmon reels will hold at least 150 yards of 12–15 pound mono.

Trip Specifics

You'll fly commercially to Anchorage where you will connect to the town of King Salmon (flight included). You will then be driven a short distance to the Lodge on the famous Naknek River. The Naknek is the only connection between Bristol Bay and the massive Naknek Lake drainage, thus, each year millions of salmon returning to the drainage to spawn must swim right past the Lodge. With all of these salmon, the native rainbow trout and arctic grayling grow to unbelievable size. Their program combines fly-out fishing to different rivers throughout the area to add diversity.

Rates

2 to 7 day trips from $5,375 to $13,310 pp. All-inclusive fly-out fishing packages provide all your fishing gear and even include the commercial flights to/from Anchorage/King Salmon. Chef-prepared meals and comfy double-occupancy cabins round out the package.

Alaska is truly one of the last frontiers for purely wild fish. Seasonal prolific runs fill the rivers with large volumes of salmon making their way to their spawning grounds and eager for the fly. The season kicks off in April with wild steelhead fishing in southeast Alaska, followed throughout the summer by various salmon migrations. Wild rainbow trout are available from ice-out, with a double-digit trout a distinct possibility at any date ...
