Sela (salmon)

ONE OF ICELAND'S BEST AND MOST CHALLENGING SALMON RIVERS

Sela is one of Iceland’s great rivers with salmon being able to access the whole 55km of its length. Though a double-handed rod river, it is very intimate and technical die to the variety of water. Lies have to be fished to specifically, with sound/line management and perfect presentation. With gin clear water, it meanders its way in and out of gorges and more open areas. Sela is a flagship of the NAFS as an example of how good management can improve the salmon stocks and benefit riparian owners.

Fishing

This is perhaps the most interesting and challenging river in Iceland with clear powerful water populated by a mixed run of salmon from 20lbs fish down to grilse. The fish react superbly to skated and tiny flies. The Sela probably has the greatest variety of pools of any river in Iceland.

Accommodation

Fossgerdi Lodge on the Sela river is run and hosted by Johan Gunnar Ararsson and his team. It is probably the most modern, spacious and luxurious fishing lodge in Iceland. It features ten large, fine rooms with sizeable modern ensuite bathrooms, one room is available with a bath.

Gear

The Sela can be fished with a double or single-handed rod and both have application on certain parts of the river. You will need chest waders, a wading stick, boots with studs and a good range of layered clothing. Only floating lines and small flies may be used which benefits the whole season.

Trip Specifics

Sela is one of the top rivers in Iceland. Hope for good numbers of fish from grilse to well into the teens caught on small flies and the hitch in reliable water. Certainly expect to enjoy the lodge and the food too, usually with a charming team of guides. Located in the north-east of Iceland, Sela is close to Vopnafjordur and only 25 mins from its airport. Alternatively you can fly into Reykjavik airport by private jet, 8 hrs away; or Keflavik airport, 8 hrs away.

Rates

Every trip to Iceland is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different lodges and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
