Wesley Hodges has assembled a stellar team of fly-fishing guides for his lodge and outfitting business, set along the renowned James River in serene and scenic southern Virginia. The all-inclusive packages offered by Wesley provide charming accommodations, wonderful meals, and excellent fishing for smallmouth, musky, and trout, depending on seasons and interests. The lodge season is essentially year-round, with smallmouth fishing March-November, trout fishing and turkey hunting in the spring, and winter months focusing on bird hunting and fishing for musky.

Fishing

The fishing focuses largely on smallmouth bass, with high numbers of fish, some reaching trophy size. Anglers will drift down the James or New River in western-style drift boats, casting poppers, and streamers. Trout and Musky trips are also available.

Accommodation

Beautifully restored farmhouse with 4 bedrooms, living spaces, and dining area. Additional 4 custom canvas-walled “Glamping” tents set along the property. Meals at the lodge are communal and taken in the dining room or under the outdoor gazebo when weather allows.

Gear

The lodge provides all the needed fishing gear, but bring personal items. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for the conditions, including rain gear. A small dry bag is recommended. Smallmouth: 7-8wt rods, floating lines. Trout: 5wt, floating line. Musky:11wt, sink lines.

Trip Specifics

With easy access from much of the East Coast, guests often drive directly to lodge, or fly into Richmond and rent a car for the short drive to the lodge property. Fishing days include a prepared breakfast, then a full day float (riverside lunch prepared by your guide) before returning to the lodge for fresh-up, drinks, dinner, and some time to relax by the fire and relive the day. Departure day includes breakfast before checkout. All fishing gear is provided, casting lessons are included on request, and the all-inclusive nature makes this trip perfect for almost anyone.
