Flyfishing Slovenia

Classic freestone and chalkstream multi-specie trout fishing

There are destinations which try to be appealing to fishers and non-fishers alike and then there are destinations that just are and Slovenia falls into the latter. Stunning scenery, history and architecture, beautiful rivers, ease of getting around, there is little not to like. This is a country that can be driven, either north to south or east to west, inside three hours. There are beautiful rivers throughout with water clarity rarely seen anywhere else in the world with a mix of wild and stocked trout. Slovenia is also the mainstay home of the marble trout.

Fishing

The fishing is a perfect mix of freestone and chalkstream rivers with rainbows, browns, grayling and marble trout in some areas with wonderful variety, beauty and clarity. Every day's fishing is a different experience with different challenges while enjoying beautiful scenery throughout the day.

Accommodation

There is a variety of hotels or guest houses on which Frontiers can advise. For best results on a fishing week, we suggest a good period of time in the centre of Slovenia for best access to many rivers, then time in the Soča valley area. There is also Bled, the coast and the wine country to enjoy.

Gear

3 to 5 weight rods are best with a medium to soft action 4 wt likely used the most. Reels with smooth drags are preferred with an assortment of leaders down to 7 or even 8X and varied nymphs and dry flies. Chest waders with felt soles are the preferred choice and wading/rain jacket required.

Trip Specifics

Guests fly into Ljubljana and we recommend at least the first night in Ljubljana right in the centre of the country. The capital is a very attractive city. We suggest staying as close to the centre as possible, it really is a lovely atmosphere with lots of bars, cafes and restaurants. It is possible to access many different rivers travelling in every direction from Ljubljana. Another good location is Kranj just outside Ljubljana, again for best access to the rivers. At some stage a visit to the Soča valley and its tributaries is a must in addition to any non-fishing interests and attractions.

Rates

Every trip to Slovenia is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different hotels and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
