For many saltwater anglers, few destinations inspire the same level of excitement as Los Roques, Venezuela. With its vast network of pristine flats, abundant bonefish, permit, tarpon, and stunning Caribbean setting, it has long been considered one of the world's premier fly-fishing destinations. Frontiers has a deep history in the archipelago, having been among the very first U.S. operators to introduce American anglers to Los Roques decades ago. Alongside trusted local partners, we helped pioneer the fishery and establish its reputation as one of the finest saltwater fly-fishing destinations in the Caribbean.
At Frontiers, we continue to monitor developments in Venezuela closely and remain in regular contact with our longtime outfitting partner, Ramon Paz of Fly Fishing Los Roques. While the destination has largely remained active for European and other international anglers during its absence from the U.S. market, we are taking a cautious and deliberate approach before recommending travel for American clients.
Recent developments are encouraging. The U.S. State Department lowered its travel advisory for Venezuela from Level 4 ("Do Not Travel") to Level 3 ("Reconsider Travel") in March, and the U.S. Embassy in Caracas has resumed operations after being closed since 2019. Direct commercial air service between Miami and Caracas has also returned, restoring an important transportation link between the two countries. Also, United will be commencing service from Houston in mid-August.
That said, we are not rushing back. Our team continues to evaluate safety, logistics, visa requirements, air access, and on-the-ground conditions carefully. We believe Los Roques remains one of the most extraordinary fisheries in the Caribbean and a destination worth waiting for.
When we are confident that every aspect of the experience meets the standards our clients expect—and that travel can be undertaken with clarity, comfort, and confidence—we will be ready to reintroduce Los Roques to the Frontiers portfolio. Until then, we'll continue to keep a close watch and share updates as conditions evolve.
