Hot weather and baby tarpon fishing go hand and hand, so it’s no wonder the months of May through September are considered the best time to fish in Campeche, Mexico.
Situated on the western side of the Yucatan Peninsula, Campeche and the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve offer an ecologically diverse mix of grass-covered flats, open water bays, mangrove-lined rivers and jungle, and has quietly earned the reputation of a world-class baby tarpon fishery. Vast numbers of baby tarpon are found along virtually the entire coastline of Campeche Bay.
Fishing from traditional flat skiffs, you’ll sight-fish creek mouths, rivers, mangrove-lined flats and shallow water open bays, looking for tarpon lazily rolling on the surface, busting bait against shoreline pockets or lying in ambush for unsuspecting baitfish. Baby tarpon like the larger adults, often put on a spectacular aerial show when hooked.
Clients Say it Best
Curtis M. of Georgia has been traveling with Frontiers for over 20 years. He recently returned from a trip in late May with his son Jack. “In short, the fishing was outstanding – just an awesome fishery. I was explaining to Jack last night that he got the equivalent of 2-3 years of juvenile tarpon fishing in four days here, compared to other various spots – Isla Holbox, SE coast of Mexico, Florida, etc. etc. It was great fun.”
For those who like to take a day off from fishing to see the sights, Campeche is a beautiful colonial city and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, due to a large number of historical landmarks within the city. Add in the nearby Mayan ruins, and you have plenty to do after fishing or on your day off.
The accommodations for your stay are at the Hotel Ocean View which is strategically located on the city´s Seafront Boulevard, five minutes from the historic Old Town Campeche with its restaurants and shops and a short fifteen-minute drive from the airport. Located across the street from the hotel is the oceanfront boardwalk, a great place to relax, take a walk or a run while enjoying the sunset as the day cools. It’s well-lit and very safe.
There are some excellent dates still available for this summer according to the owner, Miguel Encalada. Give Frontiers a call or e-mail for more information regarding this outstanding fishery.
