The northern pike is a relatively aggressive species, especially with regard to feeding. Pike can grow to a relatively large size: the average length is about 40–55 cm (16–22 in), with maximum recorded lengths of up to 150 cm (59 in) and published weights of 28.4 kg (63 lb). They are typical ambush predators, lying in wait for prey, holding perfectly still for long periods, and then exhibit amazing acceleration as they strike.

Fly rods should be 9-10 wt. or a 7-foot bait-casting or spin rod (medium heavy to heavy). 65 lb. wire leader is a minimum strength, and you’ll need it for both fly or spin fishing. This is a typical setup to handle large pike.
You’ll want larger flies that mimic the look and movements of their prey. Typically these are minnow imitations both weighted and unweighted and poppers for fly fishermen. Lures can range from noisy prop baits to subsurface stick and swim baits that mimic the baitfish in that region.
