The Rock or speckled pigeon is found across Southern Africa but the largest concentration of numbers are found in South Africa. As their name suggests, they originally inhabited rocky outcrops; as mankind has moved into their habitat, they have evolved to nest and roost in man made structures instead. The improved habitat combined with the ample food sources found in the farmers fields has caused a population boom. Once a flock targets a field of sunflowers, the farmer can expect to lose 20-30% of the crop. They are prolific breeders, each pair will lay 1-3 eggs 2-3 times a year, incubation lasts 14-18 days, and the chicks leave the nest 20-25 days later. The rock pigeon is a formidable quarry flying at speeds of up to 62 mph (100 kph) which is close to the speed of a red grouse.
